Short answer: When you live apart, a star gives you something to look towards together. Name a star, send the certificate, and both open the star page on the same night. Pick a constellation near the celestial equator, like Orion or Aquila, so the star rises from both your skies, even across hemispheres.

Why does a star work for long distance?

Distance makes small things matter. A text at the right time. A song. Knowing you're both looking at the same Moon. A named star adds one more thing you share: a point in the sky with your names on it.

It works for couples, but not only couples. Think of a son who emigrated, grandparents far away, someone working away for months, or a first Christmas apart.

How do we both "see" the same star?

Here's the honest bit. Named stars are faint, so neither of you will spot it with your eyes. What you can do is open the star page on Find My Star, use a star app, and both point the same way. Here's how.

What if we're in different hemispheres?

Some stars never rise in the south, and some never rise in the north. So choose a constellation near the celestial equator:

  • Orion – seen from almost everywhere, best December to March.
  • Aquila – home of Altair, seen from both hemispheres in mid-year.

We pick stars that rise from the country you give us. If you're in two countries, contact us before ordering and we'll help pick a star that rises in both.

A love letter template you can adapt

Copy it, change the words, make it yours. It also works as the certificate message if you cut it to one line.

[Name],

I can't be there tonight. So I did the next best thing.

There's a star in [constellation] with your name on it now. It's too faint to see with just your eyes. But it's there, and it rises over you and over me.

On [date], open the star page and look that way. I'll be doing the same.

Same sky. Not long now.

[Your name]

One-line versions for the certificate:

  • "Same sky. Not long now."
  • "Miles apart, one star."
  • "Wherever you are, look up."
